The guitar album upon which every other guitar album would soon be judged, it’s hard to overstate how revolutionary Van Halen’s self-titled debut LP sounded when it hit the hard rock scene like an atom bomb in 1978. The band delivered mammoth-sized grooves with mischievous grins, songs like “Jamie’s Crying” and “Running with the Devil” reveling in bad boy swagger and the carnival barker zaniness of livewire vocalist David Lee Roth. And then there’s Eddie Van Halen, an uncaged guitar talent that wowed the world with his playing across the album — and especially with his volcanically tap-crazed “Eruption” solo. A gamechanger that instantly made EVH an icon.
