Six albums in, Russian Circles still treat their instruments like unexplored terrain. Guidance came out of gut instinct rather than highbrow concepts, and that's exactly why it lands — the trio keeps pushing at the line between quiet and loud, simple and complex, ugly and beautiful. Guitarist Mike Sullivan, drummer Dave Turncrantz and bassist Brian Cook each play to their strengths here, chasing fresh textures without losing the band's core sound. The record opens on the meditative restraint of “Asa”, then moves through metallic savagery (“Vorel”, “Calla”), arpeggio tectonics (“Mota”), mercurial anthems (“Afrika”), somber segues (“Overboard”) and seismic Americana noir (“Lisboa”). Engineer and co-producer Kurt Ballou captured that wide tonal palette at God City Studio, holding it all together as one cohesive journey. For the album's 10th anniversary, Sargent House is issuing a limited edition with a redesigned gatefold jacket finished in metallic gold varnish.
