Christian Death’s debut album is a gothic landmark, and still delivers an exquisite chill more than 40 years after the band first slunk out of L.A.’s punky underground. Led by the magnetic drawl of then-teenaged frontman Rozz Williams, 1982’s Only Theatre of Pain is filled with legendary creep-outs like “Spiritual Cramp” and “Romeo’s Distress,” its end-times-awaiting poetics reflecting sorrowed hearts and the darkness of humanity. Morose, romantic and dangerous in equal measures, their memorably macabre death-rock cabaret has been repressed with select demos on ghoulish “Unholy Chasm"-colored vinyl.
