Jennifer Finch (1966-2026), bassist of L7, tells it straight in this memoir — grounded, candid, and edged with hard-won wisdom that sets it apart from the usual rock tell-all.
If great art comes out of hard obstacles, Finch earned every bit of hers. Recovering addict. Photographer. Co-founder of an influential pro-choice advocacy group. Bassist for the groundbreaking all-female hard rock group L7. Neglect and abuse didn't stop her from carving an artistic path and climbing out of a personal hell, and this book is her account of how she managed it, in her own words.
She was twelve when she plunged into LA's hardcore punk scene. Fourteen at her first shot of heroin. Nineteen when she joined her first band alongside Courtney Love and Kat Bjelland. By her early twenties, L7 was caught in the grunge maelstrom — she shared stages with Pearl Jam and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and in between came overdoses, a relationship with Dave Grohl, and the early, tragic deaths of some of her closest friends. Sobriety, photography and a fierce response to a deadly illness let her reinvent herself.
Finch was a pillar of strength and compassion in LA's creative community, and her death on July 18th, 2026, left a gap nothing can fill. She finished Shooting Up and Making Out just before her illness took hold — hard-hitting, funny, profane, wise, and exactly the book she meant to leave behind.
