VARIANT Ghostly Green Vinyl LP
Wood's best-selling LP gets re-edited for a fuller sound and clearer instrumentation, pushing the record somewhere new.
Back in 2023, Wood quietly teamed up with producer Kevin Antreassian to remix his biggest record, 'The Normal Album.' Both men went back into the original 2019 tapes hunting for more muscular takes, smoother edits and a more nuanced, balanced mix, and the result is one of those rare remixes that most listeners agree genuinely improves on the first version.
'The Normal Album' marks another turn in Wood's catalog, playing sardonically with Americana and doo-wop, keeping the vocals strategically restrained yet still highly emotive, and packing the lyrics with scientific and philosophical references. Some of the dark mania from his earlier 2016 release, 'SELF-iSH,' carries over, though it's arranged with greater precision now that a new band is at his command. As on his 2015 debut 'Everything is a Lot,' the songs whiplash tonally, held together by intertwined themes, recurring musical motifs and an undercurrent of obtuseness and vulnerability at once.
Once the original mix of 'The Normal Album' was out, a live version of the LP's 4th track, 'I/Me/Myself,' went unexpectedly viral, drawing ears to plenty of other songs on the record. Tracks such as '2econd 2ight 2eer' and 'Laplace's Angel' kept pulling in new fans with dense wordplay and a high-energy attitude, and the album became Wood's first real step into wider notoriety, proof that the sudden burst of popularity wasn't a fleeting trend. After some time away from the public eye, Wood started revisiting the album, aiming to give it the production he'd originally pictured.
