Great grunge supergroup, or the greatest grunge supergroup? On paper, Mad Season’s lineup — featuringAlice in Chains vocalist Layne Staley, Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready and Screaming Trees drummer Barret Martin — reads like a who’s who of Nineties-era Seattle rock royalty. In practice, 1995 debut album Above exceed expectations of that great pedigree, with Mad Season inventively and emotively surpassing the sum of its parts through a mix of anthemic rock, Hendrix-ian psych-blues and the spiritual sway of lead single “River of Deceit”. This expanded 30th anniversary edition features restored artworkand includes three bonus tracks.
