Roman Candle is FUNERAL CHIC's third full length, and the four piece didn't take the easy road getting there. After 2018's Superstition, the lineup settled, and the band chose to leave behind the punk-led powerviolence of their earlier records. What fills that space is American rock and roll with a distinctly FUNERAL CHIC bent to it.
You can hear the swagger of proto-punk forebears The Stooges and The New York Dolls in the darkest corners of the reinvigorated sound, including their take on Roky Erickson's Two Headed Dog. Early thrash and black metal flicker through too, bright and caustic.
Politics led the previous records. Here the lyrics turn inward, more personal but no less fierce. Several members have walked a path of sobriety in recent years, and the rage that alcohol once doused now lands in these words instead. Ten tracks of sweat and pungent aggression, dripping into a powder keg of a global identity crisis.
Tracking happened at Legit Biz in Greensboro, NC with engineer Kris Hilbert. Guitarist Robert Stroud of FUNERAL CHIC handled production, Matt Russell mixed, and Brad Boatright mastered at Audiosiege. Across the making of Roman Candle, FUNERAL CHIC shed old skin without ceremony and came out with something new: aggressive punk, sleazy Americana and raw heavy metal distilled into the volatile, unpredictable experience of living in modern day America. For FUNERAL CHIC, this is the start of the next blistering chapter.
