After "Everything is a Lot" put Will Wood and the Tapeworms on the punk map, the follow-up arrived fast and loud. Face paint, confetti and on-stage violence had already become the project's calling card, so the dark drama of SELF-iSH felt like the only place left to go.
Producer Kevin Antreassian offered Wood a deal with a narrow window to work in, and Wood improvised his way through it. A new lineup came together, guitarist Mike Bottiglieri helped stitch scraps of discarded and unfinished songs into something whole, and the result is a tight yet abstract psychedelic concept album built on every off-kilter idea Wood could cram in.
Production ran through the holiday season in 2015. Notepads, graphic charts and teeth piled up around the studio. What you hear is manic: screaming, theremin, kazoo, power drills, the sound of breaking furniture, and an almost heavy-metal twist on Wood's off-kilter vision. By the end the piano was bloody and the studio was wrecked. Wood has called it the "bastard child" of his discography.
His early work leans on experimental vocal delivery, honky-tonk piano smashing and darkly edgy songwriting. Those rough edges later gave way to a more precise approach, but the refusal to meet expectations stayed. Across the "Will Wood and the Tapeworms" releases (Everything Is A Lot in 2015, SELF-iSH in 2016) you can hear the first glimpses of that signature style, still raw and chaotic.
