Weezer founding member and original bassist Matt Sharp was sifting through a series of “lost albums” from his own creative life when he came across a curious multi-track reel of analog tape. It sat at the bottom of a chest of other master recordings. Those sessions turned out to be the band's very first studio recordings, the same ones that earned them the record contract behind their debut, the “Blue” album.
On the reel: raw, vividly emotional, ecstatic takes of “Say It Ain't So” and “Undone (The Sweater Song)”. Sharp and legendary producer Joe Chicarrelli carried the 1-inch Ampex tape to Los Angeles' East/West Studios for a closer look, and found the original lineup — guitarist Jason Cropper included — in explosively joyful, feral form.
Respecting the songs' original intent and the technology of the era, the tracks were remixed from top to bottom, tape to vinyl, in a 100% analog process. Sharp produced and Chicarrelli mixed, and the results make up the entirety of “1192”, named for the month and year it was recorded.
Blue album fans get the first chapter of Weezer's story here, and hearing 1192 is the quickest route into it.
