Few bands keep making records into a fifth decade, and fewer still get a recent one named among 2023's Best Albums. The Church managed both with The Hypnogogue, a record that opened a whole new era for the Australian group.
Lacuna is their 28th album, and it keeps pushing forward. Bassist, vocalist and founder Steve Kilbey describes it as intense, forlorn and exultant. Melody and instrumentation are handled with the poise that comes from decades on the road, and the songs hold attention without giving in easily.
That gift has been there across the 27 albums before this one, clearest on the jubilant 2025-2026 Singles Tour legs through Australia and North America, three-hour sets night after night.
From 1980 onward, the band has widened its cinematic mix of indie rock, shimmering post-punk, icy dreampop and psychedelic post-rock without retreading old ground. Of Skins and Heart, The Blurred Crusade and Heyday laid the foundation; 1988's Starfish broke them to the mainstream with Under the Milky Way, a single now counted among the most influential Australian rock anthems.
It arrives as a double LP in a gatefold sleeve, on CD, and digitally.
