Teen Suicide's seventh LP is due this spring on Run For Cover Records, three years after honeybee table at the butterfly feast — the record that found a second audience when "you were my star" took off on TikTok. What started in 2010 as a Sam Ray side project has shifted shape more than once. Kitty Ray joined the lineup in 2017, and by 2022 the group had gone full-time with drummer Niko Wood.
Plenty on Nude descending staircase headless is new for them. Tracking happened in a professional studio this time, a first for the band, and the whole thing was written and recorded by the full-time lineup. It's also their first since 2012 with a dedicated drummer on every song. Songwriting and vocals got split down the middle as well, with Sam and Kitty Ray (married in 2016) building each track together. Ray calls it the band's "career highlight so far."
Lyrically the album keeps circling the pursuit of fulfillment through making things, folding in death and rebirth along with the joy that can turn up after immense loss. A person isn't treated as a closed object here — more like one strand in a bigger, connected web. "Idiot" goes blunt and literal, while "Spiders" puts Kitty Ray on lead vocals and adds a darkly feminist thread to the wider story.
For reference points, take the crunch of late-'80s and '90s heavy rock: Nirvana, Radiohead, Shellac, Helmet. Recent tours with DELTA SLEEP pulled the math rock and metal side of their sound further forward too.
