The Rick Rubin-produced debut for 1998 hit like a brick through a window. Slayer riffs, Dead Kennedys attitude and Mr. Bungle weirdness all turn up in the same songs, with bulldozer rhythms running straight into jazzy interludes and Armenian folk touches. Barked punk vocals give way to melodies that are genuinely tender. Lyrically the record swings between political commentary, real poetry and pure Dr. Seussian nonsense.
The follow-up, Toxicity, made them superstars. This one cleared the path.
