Hempispheres marks a new chapter for Sleep. Founding member and lead songwriter Al Cisneros is joined by drummer Dale Crover (Melvins, Redd Kross) and guitarist Bubba Dupree (Void), and the trio pushes toward nuance and subtlety instead of piling on the overload. That core interplay, the thing that made the band special from day one, hasn't gone anywhere. Yes, Matt Pike's amicable absence has fuelled plenty of comment-section debate. Open-minded listeners get something they didn't expect: the album the moment actually needed, pressed on black vinyl.
