Sepultura's earliest albums were unhinged death metal, the sort that seemed one bar away from derailing at any moment. 1989's Beneath the Remains isn't a refined record either, but the Brazilian quartet find their footing here: weapons-grade thrashers on one side, steadier bulldozers like the lead single “Inner Self” on the other.
Death-metal producer Scott Burns was at the desk, and the massive sound he pulled set the band up as a major player in the global metal scene. Essential heaviness for a headbanger's shelf.
