Three players, no vocals, and a sound that keeps shifting shape — that's Russian Circles on Guidance, their sixth album. The band's quest to conjure multi-dimensional instrumental narratives and scout out new textures from their respective instruments hasn't slowed a bit. Songs weren't constructed out of highbrow concepts; they were forged from gut instinct and base emotional response, which is why the polarity of quiet and loud, complexity and simplicity, ugliness and beauty still runs through every track. Guitarist Mike Sullivan, drummer Dave Turncrantz and bassist Brian Cook each get room to play to their strengths. Opening with the meditative restraint of “Asa”, the album travels through metallic savagery (“Vorel”, “Calla”), arpeggio tectonics (“Mota”), mercurial anthems (“Afrika”), somber segues (“Overboard”) and seismic Americana noir (“Lisboa”). Engineer and co-producer Kurt Ballou helped the band capture that tonal range at God City Studio. This pressing comes on Cloudy/Black/Silver Splatter Vinyl LP in a redesigned gatefold jacket with metallic gold varnish, a limited edition for the album's 10th anniversary.
