VARIANT: Black Vinyl LP
Pungent Stench's experimental death metal EP, remastered. Seven tracks sit on this black vinyl LP, and the CD edition of the same release adds a DVD with “Video La Muerte” and more.
Do not expect a straight run through the band's usual death metal. A tekkno remix of “Blood, Pus and Gastric Juice” is here to pollute your ears. Covers make up much of the running order (Mentors among them), alongside remixes of older songs, and the two new tracks get the same Pungent treatment as everything else.
“Dirty Rhymes & Psychotronic Beats” worked as a gap-filler, holding the fan base over between 1991's “Been Caught Buttering” and 1994's “Club Mondo Bizarre – For Members Only”. Like most EPs it's a collection of scattered songs rather than one long statement. That doesn't leave you bored. Catchy writing and memorable hooks, the two things that drew death metal fans to this band, are still in place.
Which is not to say it's an easy listen for a hard-nosed death metal fan. The death 'n' roll sound the group had picked up won't suit everyone. They play it very well, mind you, if that sound is your thing.
