Portishead’s self-titled second album arrived in 1997, three years after their breakthrough debut, Dummy. Geoff Barrow and Adrian Utley recorded original material to sample for its backing tracks, building a darker, more abrasive setting for Beth Gibbons’ vocals. The horn-driven “All Mine” frames Gibbons’ voice with orchestral drama, while opener “Cowboys” draws its tension from an insistent, repeating rhythm. Pressed on 180g black vinyl 2LP.
