ORBIT CULTURE didn't ease into their Century Media debut. Death Above Life arrives as a limited 2CD mediabook with an alternate front cover, and it sounds like a band pulling down its own walls to build something wider.
Guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Niklas Karlsson, the man behind ORBIT CULTURE, calls it a change and a new beginning — a rebirth, in his words. That reading holds from the scorching opener "Inferna" through the title track to the elegiac closer "The Path I Walk". By the last note, ORBIT CULTURE sound like a group at the top of its game.
Film scores shape the record as much as riffs do. Karlsson names Hans Zimmer (Dune, Interstellar) and Howard Shore (Lord of the Rings) as huge influences, and he'd take the Inception soundtrack over most metal written now. Cello and piano lines add texture, which is why the final chorus of "Inferna" gets pushed wider. It also explains the dark-on-dark visuals behind ORBIT CULTURE.
The band produced the album themselves, with Buster Odeholm (Vildhjarta, Humanity's Last Breath, Thrown) handling the mix. Djent, metalcore and melodic death metal all feed in, though Karlsson says the priority is staying true to themselves — and for ORBIT CULTURE, this record is the next step along that road.
