Nachtmystium put out The World We Left Behind in 2014, and the record took a lot of flak. Most of it had nothing to do with the songs. Blake Judd, the band's mastermind, had slid into a hard heroin addiction that grew out of opioid prescription and general drug abuse years earlier. Black metal has forgiven murder, arson, political extremism and other crimes once time was served and the culprits rehabilitated; being ill and addicted, it seems, is harder to forgive. So the album got judged on anything but its musical value and sank into a kind of critical black hole. Judd called it a final death-cry from the Black Meddle era and line-up, which is close enough to accurate. What you also get is a look at the chaos behind the scenes, the inner darkness that held the band and a brutal lyrical honesty. Those things fit black metal only too well. Time to go back to The World We Left Behind and judge it on the music, which can hardly be disputed.
