Eleven years in the making, Cailín is Kate Nash's sixth studio album and a love letter to her Irish heritage. KoOoLkOjAk produced it, and the sessions happened on Ireland's west coast at Stiúideo Cuan, with pioneering trad musician Charlie Lennon overseeing. What comes out is raw and raucous: traditional Irish sounds, punk energy, nods to hip hop production and Nash's knack for a killer hook.
Nash grew up in an Irish community in North Harrow and attended a Catholic school. Summers with her mother's loving, vibrant Irish family in Ireland gave her the music she calls her first. Pub bands, Sharon Shannon gigs, a bored-looking eight-year-old in a puffer jacket playing accordion better than anyone she'd seen: it all felt natural, and the respect for musicians stuck with her.
Punk protest songs sit next to a joyful celebration of trad music. Colonialism, inequality, religion, internalised shame, forgiveness and family run through the record, fed by the texture of Irish folklore and mythology. Strong Irish women hold the centre: the girls of the title track 'Cailín', the single mother facing the housing crisis in 'Póg Mo Thóin', and Nash's grandmother in the poignant yet joyful 'Irish Saints'.
