Formed in the fall of 2016, Elder Devil started as a DIY studio project between Jacob Lee (Hellish Form, PlasticBag FaceMask) and Stephen Muir (Cabin Fire). Both wanted a bleak, abrasive grindcore band with sludge and black metal running through it, taking cues from Trap Them, The Secret and Rotten Sound. Muir wrote the lyrics and handled vocals, while Lee took on music and production.
Their first EP, Graves Among the Roots (Medusa Crush Recordings), landed in 2017, followed by the full length The Light Dimmed Eternal (Crown and Throne Ltd./Roman Numeral Records) in 2019. Soon after, the pair turned Elder Devil into a full band, recruiting friends Ryan Urquidez (dontcryformeimalreadydead, Cabin Fire) on bass and Pete Ruacho (Amenthes, Nani SS) on drums. The 2021 EP Fragments of Hell (PlasticSkull Records/SludgeLord Records) was the first release from that full lineup.
Nearly every show from March 2020 through 2021 had to be cancelled because of the pandemic, including an 11-day West Coast tour. So the band filmed a live performance instead, showing the full lineup playing songs from every release. It was shot in their practice space by long-time cameraman and friend Steven Thomas, with Jacob recording and mixing. Live in Chinatown is a love letter to the Fresno scene and to everyone who has backed the band over the years. You can watch it on the band's YouTube channel, stream it on all platforms, or download it free on their Bandcamp on November 5th.
On signing with Prosthetic, Elder Devil says: "It's both exciting and humbling to be working with a label as prolific as Prosthetic. It's an honor to be among the great bands and alumni from Prosthetic's past and present. We really can't wait for people to hear the songs for our upcoming Prosthetic full length debut."
