Bosse-de-Nage and Deafheaven's landmark 2012 Split has been remixed, remastered and pressed again, back on vinyl and cassette for the first time in 14 years. Photographer Dylan Hausthor shot new artwork for it. Two acclaimed Bay Area metal bands, one early joint record, now heard with fresh clarity and dimension.
Formed in 2006, Bosse-de-Nage first crossed paths with Deafheaven at one of the latter's earliest shows, held in a since-closed art gallery in San Francisco's Mission District. Deafheaven's demo had only just started making the rounds online. "Their performance was amazing; it was clear right away that they were a force to be reckoned with," Bosse-de-Nage recalls. Blackgaze and post-black metal weren't settled terms yet, and the two groups spotted something familiar in each other. Shared gigs turned into a friendship that stuck.
Nobody can quite pin down how Split began. It landed just over a year after Deafheaven's 2011 debut Roads to Judah, and both bands agree only that the pairing made immediate sense. Deafheaven covered Mogwai's "Punk Rock / Cody"; Bosse-de-Nage wrote "A Mimesis of Purpose," their first work with Astrid J. Smith, who arranged and performed the strings.
Released by The Flenser in 2012, Split became an early milestone for the label and both bands. "We've been looking forward to this project for a while," Deafheaven vocalist George Clarke said at the time. "It's very exciting to be working with two of the most innovative and forward-thinking staples in the Bay Area, Bosse-de-Nage and Flenser Records."
Out of print for years, both bands chose to revisit their contributions rather than simply repress the original. Jack Shirley of Atomic Garden, a longtime Deafheaven collaborator, remixed "Punk Rock / Cody," while Richard Chowenhill of Agriculture remixed Bosse-de-Nage's "A Mimesis of Purpose." Fourteen years on, the 2026 edition drops that moment back into the present.
