Fifteen-plus years in, Cloud Nothings are still one of the most vital bands in modern guitar music — raw energy, sharp songwriting, explosive live sets, and festival slots at Coachella, Primavera Sound, Bonnaroo and Pitchfork Music Festival. What Kind of Hell Did You Survive? finds them stepping deliberately out of the indie-rock lane into heavier ground, which they call their “heaviest, most intense record yet.” Seth Manchester (Lightning Bolt, The Body, Battles) recorded it, and the heavy rock the band has soaked up lately shows: Queens of the Stone Age, Motörhead, Earth, Electric Wizard. Lyrically the songs take cues from political metal and hardcore, confronting cruel governments, the value of community, and a wider frustration with how things are going. It's a new chapter, and a more confrontational one.
