On Burned, Alec Ounsworth turned a rough stretch of life into songs. The seventh Clap Your Hands Say Yeah album lands six years after New Fragility, and it grew out of grief, confusion and heartbreak, arriving as both a long-awaited return and a set of songs written close to the bone.
A relationship ended. His mother, his uncle and a close friend died. Ounsworth had been leaning on what he called “negative writing,” and he decided this record wouldn’t be all doom and gloom. He’d been out on the road for a 2025 anniversary tour, back in the band’s early energy, so he wrote these tracks with the live show in mind — a vibrant, dynamic collection that picks up where two decades of zigs and zags left off.
Literature and psychology studies fed the lyrics, which circle generational trauma, shared suffering, and the things we inherit from those who came before. Lead single “Fever Of The Mind” stacks synth riffs under lines about depression, alienation and recurring cycles. “Touchy,” “Over The Hill” and “Late Wish” show how far the record roams stylistically.
What Burned holds onto is the mix — the highs and lows of what we witness, lose and accept while working out who we’ve become. It knows the burdens. It still says keep going.
