35TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION OF THE LEGENDARY SECOND ALBUM OF CLASSIC DEATH METAL FEATURING JAMES MURPHY & RECORDED AT MORRISOUND STUDIOS WITH SCOTT BURNS. PRESENTED ON LIMITED MARBLE VINYL.
Thirty-five years back, Cancer tore into the UK extreme metal scene and built a serious worldwide following across seven studio albums, a run that even included time on the major label EastWest under Warner Music. 2018’s ‘Shadow Gripped’ brought the core band back together for the first time since 1995, and 2025’s ‘Inverted World’ proved the reinvigorated group still had every ounce of its old-school brutality.
Out in 1991, right as global death metal was boiling over, ‘Death Shall Rise’ still stands as one of the genre’s classic pillars. Compared with the debut ‘To The Gory End’, the composition and sound here took a clear step forward — the raw attack that made that first record so ferocious never left.
Around the core trio — John Walker on guitar and vocals, Ian Buchanan on bass, Carl Stokes on drums — sat revered guitar virtuoso James Murphy (Death, Obituary, Disincarnate), with Deicide’s Glen Benton adding a guest backing vocal. Sessions took place at the legendary US studio Morrisound (Sepultura, Morbid Angel, Deicide), with the equally renowned and prolific producer Scott Burns at the desk.
