ANATHEMA'S CLASSIC 1995 OPUS OF ETHEREAL ATMOSPHERIC DOOM.
PRESENTED ON BLACK VINYL, WITH REMASTERED AUDIO FROM ORGONE STUDIOS.
Anathema have dodged easy labels for most of their career. Forming around the turn of the 1990s alongside Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride as part of the Peaceville 3, the band built a legacy that carried them from doom and death metal into rock and progressive territory, release by release, until they stood among the UK's most critically acclaimed rock acts.
The Silent Enigma was their second studio album, out in the summer of '95, and the first with guitarist Vincent Cavanagh on vocal duty after Darren White's departure. Where Darren's delivery was guttural, Vincent pushed the band's possibilities outward, with a range beyond his years that sat over thoughtful atmospherics and crushing Celtic Frost style riffs — the Swiss legends being a notable inspiration. The result was highly atmospheric, often emotional gothic doom, and it spawned classics such as "Restless Oblivion", "Sunset Of Age", "The Silent Enigma" and "A Dying Wish". Metal press and fans called it a doom metal classic, and it has stayed a firm favourite in the scene.
This edition lands on black vinyl, with the 2026 remaster created at Orgone Studios by Jaime Gomez-Arellano.
