Guidance is Russian Circles' sixth album, and it finds the band still hunting for new sounds from their respective instruments. Nothing here was built from highbrow concepts — these songs were forged out of gut instinct and base emotional response. Quiet against loud, complexity against simplicity, ugliness against beauty: the same polarities the band has examined all along, sharpened once more. Guitarist Mike Sullivan, drummer Dave Turncrantz and bassist Brian Cook all play to their collective strengths. Album opener “Asa” sets a meditative tone before the record heads into metallic savagery (“Vorel”, “Calla”), arpeggio tectonics (“Mota”), mercurial anthems (“Afrika”), somber segues (“Overboard”) and seismic Americana noir (“Lisboa”). Engineer and co-producer Kurt Ballou worked with the band at God City Studio to fold that broad tonal palette into one cohesive journey. This limited edition black vinyl LP arrives in a redesigned gatefold jacket with metallic gold varnish, pressed to mark the album's 10th anniversary.
